Easter Holiday Party!
For all Moldovans, Easter is the most important holiday of the Orthodox religion. It is synonymous with renewal, purity, light and joy. But above all it is the rebirth of Christ. This is why Easter is accompanied by religious traditions and customs.
Here are two Moldovan traditions from this religious holiday:
The red egg, symbol of suffering
This egg, duck or goose, represents the suffering of Christ and of life. Moldovans have a habit of painting it red and adding patterns that differ depending on regions and villages.
On Easter morning, after having previously bathed the red eggs, they wash their faces with this water. It will bring them beauty, happiness and health.
Easter a religious holiday above all
Moldovans can spend Easter with the family or go to cathedrals the previous evening to celebrate this holiday in the company of the other faithful.
Traditionally, Mass is celebrated in the Cathedral of the Moldovan capital, located in Chişinău, which is also broadcast live on television and radio.
During this mass, the faithful listen to a disembodied voice, in the dark, who says prayers until midnight. Following these prayers, the priest leaves the altar and announces that Christ has risen: “Hristos a înviat! “. This expression will be used as a greeting for the following weeks.
Easter and local gastronomy!
Preceded by 7 weeks of Lent, Easter is eagerly awaited by the Moldovans. It is the occasion for large meals. On the menu: leg of lamb, racituri or cozonac, delicious pastries. Moldovans also appreciate accompanying these feasts on local wines known for their finesse and quality.
